Clock We are very excited to offer a great new wine education series - our "1-Hour Wine School" TM and "1-Hour Beer School TM which will focus on different wine (and beer) regions, grape/hops varietals or specialty subjects all covered in one hour and for only about $45 per class. Each class will taste four wines/beers and have an educational presentation on each subject covered and you get to keep a great Washington Wine Academy/DC School of Beer logo glass. Session limited to 40 attendees and we may have up to two sessions per evening. Come out and join us for this great new event!

In the DC School of Beer’s “1-Hour Beer School,” we give you the beer basics in just an hour. If you don’t know the difference between Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc or even if you do, the new “1-hour Wine School” at the Washington Wine Academy is a great excuse to brush up on your wine education.

Our instructor will walk you through four wines, accompanied by Cabot Creamery tasty cheeses, and you’ll learn enough to impress your friends or at least look at a wine list with a sense of calm instead of panic. Grape Cluster Advanced Certificate AC0910 - Details:

The Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Advanced Certificate - Level Three provides the next level of course study in the WSET process. Again, this takes your training to the next level as it covers wines and spirits and all of the wine making regions of the World at a deeper level.

This course also covers the major wine producing regions of the world, grapes and components of winemaking, stylistic and environmental factors that affect grape growing and processing as well as all aspects of wine service, wine storage, wine trends, food and wine pairing. In addition, you will be taught the WSET systematic approach to tasting wines to help you assess wines in your everyday life.

The Washington Wine Academy has been an authorized training center for nearly five years and has trained over 800 Washington DC area students in our Intermediate and Advanced Certificates. For those of you wishing to continue the learning process, we are please to offer WSET Diploma (Level Four) courses starting in September 2009.

A concentration in the wine industry or previous wine course work is preferred for success in this course. Class is appropriate for students who have a serious interest in wine, and those who wish to broaden their knowledge. The AC class is considered a pre-requisite for the WSET Diploma - Level Four course.

Advanced Certificate covers the wines and spirits of the world in ten three-hour sessions, once a week for ten weeks followed by a an exam session. Each session includes sampling of 8-10 wines.

The exam (on the 11th night) consists of three elements:

The Tasting Component of a wine. Done blind to assess your comprehesion of the Systematic Approach to tasting. Students will have analyzed nearly 100 wines throughout the course for practice and understanding purposes.

Multiple Choice - 50

Theory - Short answer and essay.

Upon successful completion of the exam you will be entitled to the use of a post nominal on your business card for professional purposes.

Note: Washington Wine Academy consulted a Master of Wine (only 25 MW's in the US) for the creation of our presentation materials and handouts to ensure the integrity of information presented.

The course fee includes:

    • WSET Course Text, Study Guides and Systematic Approach to tasting
    • 10 Course lectures (3 + hours each)

    • WWA Lecture Notebook with High Quality Laser Printed (not copies) Color course presentations

    • Sample Quizzes, Study Guides and Session Wine Lists

French Wine Scholar

The French Wine Scholar program offers a solid and comprehensive foundation for understanding the world of French wines.

The French Wine Scholar is the official curriculum for French wine as endorsed by Wines of France/French National Wine Office, as well as numerous other French wine trade organizations such as Burgundy Wines, Inter Beaujolais, Interrhone, and Provence Wines, among many others. It was developed by the French Wine Society to provide current, accurate information on the wine regions of France and validate proficiency in the Wines of France.

Intermediate to advanced students of wine who follow this in-depth curriculum and pass the exam will earn the French Wine Scholar (FWS) post-nominal.

The course consists of 8 modules that will be delivered over 24 hours of classroom instruction and includes wine samples representative of each region. Two sessions will be taught each Saturday. See full curriculum for more details.

The exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions regarding all French wine regions. Passing score is 75.
