Why Are We Here?

Once upon a time when we wanted to order a glass of wine we would ask, “What white wines do you serve?” A wine list was never offered… a vintner never mentioned, and options did
not abound.

THAT was once upon a time. Fortunately for wine lovers everywhere there is no better time in the history of mankind to be a wine drinker than right now. With over 55,000 wines on the retail wine market in the United States we have more options than ever to enjoy fantastic affordable wines from around the World.

The only issue at hand in this near-perfect wine world in which we live…is WHAT to drink. Have you been in one of these large wine superstores lately? This is not like deciding what brand of potato chips to buy…this is wine. Generally, we can live with a bum bag of chips. But, a bum bottle of wine – no way. After you have gone to the effort to grill that perfect steak, sear the perfect seafood, bake that perfect creation you MUST have the perfect accompaniment. That is where “Wine Education” becomes the new upcoming Adult Education for all of us. Though, we may have our degrees, even advanced degrees - they won't help you navigate a fancy wine list or survive in the aisles of the wine superstore.

Our solution to the issue at hand – the Washington Wine Academy - our non-profit based in Alexandria, VA focusing on providing informative educational wine tastings in the metro area. We utilize wine experts from area publications such as the Washington Post (Michael Franz) and the Washington Times and Washingtonian Magazine (Paul Lukacs).
